Docking

The dock running from the south to the north is extended by a breakwater. A working light marks its end, but one should give it a wide berth and not mix up the lights on Ilheu Grande which is half a mile further to the east.

Once inside the breakwater the water shallows slowly.

The old fishing harbour has its own breakwater running from the shore in a northeasterly direction - often submerged in high tides. This harbour is now completely enclosed and no longer a berthing option.

The yacht anchorage is 3 cable lengths west of this breakwater, north of the Yacht Club. It shallows up almost ¾ of a mile outside the YC and boats with more than 2m draft will have to stay a fair bit away from the club. It is quite common that the boat man of the YC comes out to greet and advise you. Good protection when winds are from the south, but rather exposed in northerlies.

There are only few resident boats on moorings. The Club House, identified by its thatched roof, offers visiting yachts the use of the facilities, a bar, swimming pool, restaurant and very limited repair service. Call on VHF 68 to arrange a mooring, or if not available, drop the anchor here. The YC run a water taxi service.

Ilheus is a big town and all services are available (except hauling out), though it may take some time to find them. With the Yacht Club being some 5 km away from the town center, a taxi is recommended, especially after dark.

Friendly, welcoming club. Mooring buoys available, but services offered to boats on club buoys and anchored off the Club. Water taxi, bar, and a restaurant which is open on Friday and Saturday evenings. The dinghy dock is available to visitors, however be aware the gate closes at 1700 during the week.
Large undercover area and workshops for most repairs including engine maintenance and repairs. Sail repairs. Slipway for hauling craft using a cable and tractor (only for small boats and finding a cradle may prove a problem).

We used the yacht club to go onshore and leave our kayak, as there are no other good places to go ahore. The club did not charge us anything. There seem to be no facilities like showers, and the restaurant is only open on Friday and Saturday evening. Note also that the yacht club gate closes at 5pm during the week, so you have to back by then to get to your temder.
The town is 1.5km away through a residential area. We felt safe amd walked all over town. Supermarket Itao is open 7/7 and a short walk away.
The town itself is nothing special.
We went to the Capitania (Marinha) to check in after they had contacted the yacht club about us. Very friendly and forthcoming.
The anchorage is only pleasent in southerlies. In easterlies it's rolly, too. We did not swim, as sewege seems to be emptied into the bay.

The small port of the fisherman, do not exist anymore, is been build a wall and all the basin is completely close.
The only option for anchoring is in front of the Yacht Club together with the fisherman.
Good protection with the southerly wind but very bad and swelling with the northerly winds.
The Yacht club is very friendly and welcoming, even at the anchor and not on the buoy, they come to pick up us with the Yacht dinghy and we enjoy a good meal at the restaurant with live music.
