We are planning our trip from Malaysia/Thailand to Madagascar in 2009. We think the best time is to leave early March, sail first to the Maldives, stay about two weeks and then to Chagos.
Jimmy Cornell's world cruising routes advices to leave Chagos for Madagascar from May to June or September to October. Delwyn McPhun's East Africa pilot advises the months July to October as the best.
My question: Is something wrong with July?
With regards,
Pieter C. van Nijkerk.
Hello Pieter,
My suggestions are for "the best time". During the months of July and
August the SE winds in that area can be very strong, occasionally with a
cross swell from the south, so while it is possible and safe to make the
passage in those months is may be uncomfortable. July to October have
indeed the best winds but also the strongest... so take your pick!
Make sure you get your cruising permit from the British Foreign Office
to allow you to visit Chagos.
Good luck.... and please let us know how the trip went!
