Australian Import Duty Costs
clairemaslin@googlemail.com
We are intending to sail to Australia with a British registered vessel, VAT paid. When we arrive we are hoping that we will have a full migration visa for Australia. Does anyone have any experience of what this may mean in terms of us having to officially import our boat into Australia in terms of duty and sales tax? Is it possible to have the yacht remain in Australia in our ownership without incurring any costs? We would not be seeking to sell the boat in Australia, just to maintain ownership and sail her within her waters. Worst case scenario is when would duty be liable? Comments very welcome!

Buying a used sailboat from the US
canalta@albertacom.com
We are looking in to the purchase of a 47' sailboat in Maine, leaving it on the dock for 3 months until all refitting is done and cruising to the Caribbean for an extended period. We are Canadian citizens and wondering the costs and documents needed to complete a private transaction. If anyone can advise us? Claudio

Indonesian Customs Bond
val@noonsite.com
Noonsite would like to hear of the experiences of any cruisers who have visited Indonesia recently. In particular, if you were, or were not, asked for a bond based on the value of your boat. How long did you stay and which ports did you visit? Was the bond returned promptly on leaving the country? The Sail Indonesia organisers are most concerned about this issue and any (suitable) comments will be forwarded to the Customs Office in Jakarta.

Passage from E. Cuba to the Bahamas

Request for lightning protection information
May 08
a4woo54@hotmail.com
Having suffered one lightning strike in a Croatian marina which wiped out most of my electronics I don't want a repeat performance. I have tried to find if there is any way to minimise lightning damage but to date it appears that we have to rely upon luck of not being struck. I'm intending crossing the Indian Ocean at the end of the south west monsoon where my little mast would be the only lightning conductor. Any ideas to mitigate potential damage would be most welcome. Safe Long Term Marinas in Central America
panorth@alaska.net
We just purchased a boat in Florida that we need to move to Alaska. We are looking for information on where people leave boats in Central America and Mexico when for some reason they must leave their cruising life behind for a while. We expect to leave the boat for about 10 months each time. Any information that can be offered and recommendations for safe havens will be greatly appreciated.

Anchors for the Med.
breakaway@gimail.af.mil
I arrived in the Med recently and have heard that I need an anchor which is designed to set in grass and weed and that my trusty CQR does not fit the bill.
I have information on the Spade, Manson Supreme and a Bugell design locally produced in Turkey. The Manson would be my first choice but would have to be imported from the USA or UK.
Can anyone give me information regarding importing to Turkey or Rhodes. The Turkish Bugell is the least expensive but I have no information as to whether this anchor is well made or reliable. Information and experiences of these anchors would be gratefully received.

Aquapro Inflatable Boats - Warrantee Claims
auspray@gmail.com
We purchased an Aquapro SMR 901 (Polymar) inflatable boat in October 2006. Within 6 months of purchase all of the handles and fittings started to fall off. We have experienced on-going problems with the manufacturer, RFD Australia, getting them to firstly acknowledge our claim and more recently coming to an agreement on a satisfactory resolution. Have any fellow yachties experienced similar problems with their Aquapro inflatables and/or dealing with RFD Australia. Kevin Comer

Motomarine Stuffybox
sally.kemp@yahoo.co.uk
We just had a Motomarine Stuffybox seal put on the propeller shaft. We find it very simple and the production quality very low (in terms of packaging, info sheet etc.) Just wondering if you can advise of others´ experiences with the longevity of the seal or the relative value of the system compared with other types. We had a Volvo system in mind instead of the Vetus we have on (which failed due to a clogged inlet pipe) but they have been hard to deal with (we are in the Cape Verdes.) What are the relative merits of the various systems? Perhaps there is a chat group for this topic? Sally

Perkins Engine For Sale
prestonsontour@hotmail.com
I have a 1988 Renault Vanguard bus fitted Perkins 6 litre, 6 cylinder engine, only 100,00 kms. I have been informed that this engine is generally used as a marine diesel. I am no longer using the bus and consider selling it for spares. Any help or advice would be welcomed. My mobile telephone number is + 34 962255112.

Self Steering Solution
rtrowbridge@svprecipice.com
I have a gaff rigged Bristol Channel Cutter and would like to devise my own self steering solution. All of the self-bult steering solutions I know of use the backstay, which I do not have. I am looking for someone who has a non-commercial self steering system for a boat with an outboard rudder. I know about sheet to tiller and other sail to steering methods. I would like to build a windvane without reinventing the wheel. Thank you in advance. Rolland Trowbridge.

Watermaker in Cold Climates
jon@explorenorth.no
I'm planing to install a watermaker in my Ovni 435 this winter. Next year I'm going to circumnavigate (try, anyway) Spitbergen and as most information about watermakers only state how well they function in 25 degress of water (extremely seldom in Norway, and not possible in Spitsbergen) I wonder what your experience with watermakers in cold climate is? All input will be highly appreciated.
Best regards, Jon

In 2010, the cruise will be about 7 months and will extend to Hudson Bay and Greenland. 2011 will find the boat cruising to the Galapagos islands followed by a 2012 cruise to Alaska.
I would like one or two crew members for each/all of these adventures. If you have interest, please contact me directly. Thanks, Tommy.
