Jamaica : Profile
Jamaica is a beautiful island with hundreds of miles of coastline and abundance of natural harbours; unfortunately the high level of crime, muggings and theft keeps most yachtsmen away. While the present situation remains unchanged it is doubtful that the number of visiting yachts will increase significantly.
Repair facilities can only be described as adequate and workshops willing to undertake an urgent job can only be found with local help.
Security is a problem and no yacht should be left unattended. It is advisable not to carry valuables or much money when ashore.
The Montego Bay Yacht Club is the notable exception as this is a safe place to leave the boat when visiting the interior. Facilities and security is also good at Port Antonio Marina.
The climate is tropical and humid, and Jamaica lies in the hurricane zone. The hurricane season lasts from June to November.
