  Valentia (Cahersiveen) : Profile

Docking

This attractive corner of County Kerry is a wonderful spot to explore and, if necessary, wait out one of the Atlantic storms which sweep this coast, even in summer.

Valentia harbour itself is the elongated area of sheltered water south of Valentia Island. The southern entrance, called Portmagee Sound, is narrow, and, at the village of Portmagee, is spanned by an opening bridge. The main entrance is to the NE, at the eastern end of Valentia Island. This leads to a large protected anchorage. On the eastern side of this is the Valentia River, and 2 miles from the entrance is the town and marina of Cahersiveen.

The most convenient anchorage in the harbour is south of the pier at Knightstown (in about 4m) where it is easy to land the dinghy. The holding can be tricky in many parts of the harbour due to kelp.
