  Iraklion : Profile

Clearance

Having entered the outer harbour, arriving yachts should make their way to the old Venetian port in the southwestern corner. An old fortress stands guard on the starboard side of the narrow entrance. For clearing in, it is best to dock as close as possible to the Port Authority building. One should not come alongside the short quay opposite the Venetian fortress, as the quay is fronted by large boulders and concrete blocks, which have tumbled in the water creating a hazard for the unwary. There is plenty of additional docking space along the northwest breakwater, but this entails a longer walk to the various offices.

The skipper should visit the Port Captain's office with the ship's documents, crew passports and vaccination certificates, if coming from abroad, or with the transit log if coming from another Greek port. Yachts clearing into Greece will be issued a transit log by the Port Captain's office, who will also advise on the procedure if any of the crew needs a visa for Greece. Yachts arriving from some areas, such as Egypt, may also be visited by a quarantine officer. The Port Captain's office is open 24 hours, Tel. 22 9445, Fax 24 4934.

Docking

Two new pontoons have been installed in the Venetian Harbour, but finding a vacant space is not easy, especially in summer. There is, however, space for yachts on one of the quays in the outer port but advised to call port authorities on entry.
