 Royan : Profile
A well sheltered port inside the Gironde esturary. The approach is dangerous in strong winds from the W or SW on the ebb.
The estuary is formed by the mouths of the Garonne and Dordogne rivers, and allows access to Bordeaux and on to the Mediterranean via the inland route.
The harbour area is large with plenty of marina berths and moorings. There is also a new marina just S of Port Bloc on the opposite shore.
The town itself provides all facilities and services of a popular holiday resort, and forms a useful jumping off point for cutting across Biscay to Bilbao.
