Kolonia : Profile
Pohnpei is the largest and tallest island in the FSM. Its tall peaks cause plenty of rain, creating more than 40 rivers and many spectacular waterfalls.
Kolonia port control should be contacted on Channel 16 about two hours before arrival. The operator will advise where to come alongside. For clearing in it is best to come alongside the commercial wharf as customs and immigration may wish to board the boat. Agriculture, police and health officials may also visit. If there is no space at the wharf, one can anchor and go ashore. The customs and immigration offices are housed in separate buildings in town.
Arrivals at weekends should be avoided as overtime fees will be charged. Those arriving on a Sunday may anchor at buoy number 6 and clear in on Monday morning. The ship's log may be inspected to see if the boat has made any stops before clearing in. Holding tanks may also be inspected (see Restrictions).
On departure, it is possible to clear customs in town, but immigration may insist on clearing the yacht at the commercial wharf.
The channel leading into the inner harbour is poorly marked,
so local help may be needed.
Updated January 2009.
