Puerto Amistad : Profile
Puerto Amistad is located in Bahía de Caráquez, known locally as simply "Bahía" 36 nautical miles south of the Equator and 600 miles from Panama. It is a very safe place to leave your boat while you travel inland or return home. Because Bahía is located in a dry tropical zone, your boat will not suffer from the mold and mildew that is rampant in wet tropical locations such as Panama.
Yachts must email the Navy while underway or on arrival guayaquil_radio@digmer.org
Once the Ecuadorian Navy (DIGMER) has acknowledged the email and entered the details on their database, the yacht will be received by the local authorities at Puerto Amistad. An agent is no longer required and Tripp Martin of Puerto Amistad will assist with clearance, contact him in advance on puertoamistadecuador@yahoo.com
A visa is not required ahead of arrival. Likewise, a cruising permit is not needed to cruise the coast of Ecuador. On arrival the yacht will be inspected by the navy.
The Port Captain's office is located in front of Puerto Amistad's dinghy dock.
After you have checked in with the Port Captain, you will have to take a bus to Manta in order to clear with Immigration. In Manta, get off the bus at the Policia Nacional which is where Immigration is located. You'll need a copy of your previous zarpe, crewlist, and receipts that you got from the Port Captain. You can get copies just outside, next to the Policia, in a liquor store. You can get 90 days without a problem, and the visa/tourist card will cost $15 each. You may want to get a copy of the immigration receipts because the Port Captain in Bahía will want a copy when you return. To get back to Bahía, flag any bus that has "Portoviejo" in the windshield.
The harbour entrance is not buoyed, currents can be strong (there is an 8-10 foot tidal range here) and river shoals may not accord with published charts. All vessels require permission from the Capitania before entering and must also have a pilot on board. Call Puerto Amistad on channel 69 and they will arrange for one of their pilots to come out. See the web site for Puerto Amistad for more information www.puertoamistadecuador.com/
