Luperon : Profile
Luperon is a great hurricane hole with a very friendly sailing community. It is the first and only really major anchorage for boats heading East.
Access to the harbour is in shallow water and the harbour water is foul. One should avoid swimming or using the water maker here.
Luperon, though a small rural town, has markets and hardware stores, discos, hospital, police, and two dentists.

Anchor anywhere and hoist a Q flag and wait for Dominican entry officials. It is customary to offer them a cold soft drink. If they don’t show, dinghy to the government dock and walk into town. At the outskirts, to the left is a path leading to a small bridge and the hilltop naval outpost. The commandante will record your presence, giving you legal permission to land. The Immigration officer will catch up with you later.
There is a fee of $5 for garbage disposal and water at the government dock.
Agriculture charge a fee of $10 per person.
The Commandante charges $20 per boat on entry.
Immigration charge $52.50 for the captain and $10 each crewmember for a "tourist card". This is valid for two weeks. You may then extend up to three months for approx. 400 or 600 pesos each.
The Port authority require US$10 as a port entry fee and on departure will charge US$15 per month you have stayed.
Make a call on VHF channel 68 if local help or knowledge is required.
Advice from cruisers is that fees do change and it's worth talking face to face with local yachties on arrival to find out how the situation currently stands.
Ocean World Marina, just East of Luperon, is also an official port of entry.
Luperon harbour (also known as Puerto Blanco) is a large enclosed bay providing excellent shelter. Its position on the north coast, opposite the Turks and Caicos Islands, make it an obvious component of any southbound cruising plans.
The Puerto Blanco Marina is a gathering place for cruising sailors and various social activities are organised. There is now also the new Marina Luperon Yacht Club, further improving facilities here.
See Report on Luperon, for tips on anchoring. Be aware of the risk of entering Luperon bay at night due to numerous fishing nets located outside the channel.
