Direction Island (South Keeling) : Profile
Warning: Cocos Keeling entrance The GPS position of the entrance into the lagoon, west of Direction Island, is reported not to accord with most charts, both paper and electronic. Previously Noonsite reported that the GPS coordinates of the centre of the pass are 12deg 05.327 S 96deg 52.333 E. Latest waypoints submitted by a visting yacht (July 2007) are obtained from an electronic chart and are correct as follows:
(WGS84) (1) 12°05.2096' S, 96°52.1355' E.(2) 12°05.5991' S, 96°52.1282' E.(3) 12°05.7099' S, 96°52.3618' E.(4) 12°05.51185' S, 96°52.9142' E.. This will put you in the Direction Island anchorage area. The pass from the outer into the inner lagoon is marked by two floating perch type buoys.
The entrance pass to the atoll is deep, wide, and well lit. On the other hand, the buoys leading into the yacht anchorage at Direction Island are unlit and anyone arriving in the dark might be best advised to anchor in a convenient area outside the yacht anchorage until daylight. Be aware that the supply ship often arrives at night and will anchor in the area of the entrance range lights.
Call "Cocos Customs" on VHF CH 20 at the 12 mile limit or at 7am from the quarantine area, if you arrive outside office hours. Holding in the anchorage is good, there is little shelter from the SE Winds, but there is little swell in the lagoon.
Cocos Police Nelson Mandela Walk, next to the tennis courts. Tel:+61 8 9162 6600 All Customs, Immigration and general police enquiries.
Please keep Direction Island clean.
Facilities listed here are mainly located on West Island, unless indicated differently.
