  Tazacorte : Profile

Location

The quiet town of Tazacorte is situated on the west side of La Palma and claims to be the warmest place on the island. Puerto de Tazacorte is the fishing port and has a long promenade, a black sand beach, narrow streets lined with colourful old houses and many bars and seafood restaurants.

Tazacorte village is about 1km away, and is the main centre with a town hall, post office, shops and supermarket.

Docking

The fishing harbour is protected by a large breakwater; the harbour should not be entered in a large westerly ground swell as the seas tend to break over the harbour entrance. Two pontoons have been installed in the NE corner but most places are taken up by small boats. Visiting yachts may be able to comer either alongside the quay by the fixed crane, or alongside the wall below the crane. It may also be possible to pick up a mooring buoy and come stern to the main (western) quay.

Attention should be paid to the swell which enters the harbour and can damage boats. This is still happening in spite of the breakwater having been extended to give better protection. When closing with the harbour beware of the extensive fish farms to the NW of the entrance.

On arrival the captain should report to the port office, a white building inside the harbour gates, open 0800-2100 Tuesday to Friday, 0800-1530 Monday and Saturday. On Sundays there is only a security guard. Port Office Tel/Fax 0034 922 480807.
