We recently had a new dinghy shipped to Roatan, Honduras on the
recommendation of other cruisers who had equipment shipped in without
heavy fees and ease of pickup, etc. Things have changed with the new
government.
Any items valued over $1000 US you will need to hire a customs agent
who will charge according to the value and amount of time spent.
Various items will bring different types of duty and taxes. As an
example: Our 9.5 ft. inflatable dinghy was assessed 15% duty and 12%
tax based on declared value on the shipping co. invoice plus all other
charges such as shipping. None were offered to be refunded upon
departure. This plus the agent's fees came to about 30%. Another boat
had some small equipment and personal items that valued about $3000 and
they had a similar experience.
The only good news is they are trying to work out procedures for "yacht
in transit", so things may yet change again soon.
In regards to customs agents, the only company we have heard good
recommendations for is Ana Carib in Coxen Hole. They have many good
agents that speak English.
We thought this might be of value to other cruisers. If we can give you
any more information, please let us know.
Our thanks to James and Laura Kirby for this information.
