Honiara - Security

As of this writing (November 2001) Honiara continues to experience scattered lawlessness, including gunfire, in the wake of the "ethnic tensions" of 1999 and 2000. The police are generally ineffective at deterring or controlling crime. Daylight hours are safe throughout Honiara, and to date no violence has been committed against non-Solomon Islanders. Many other areas of Guadalcanal are under the control of "strongmen" and the presence of the International Peace Monitoring Force does not guarantee safety. Before travelling to Guadalcanal, one should obtain the latest information available from local sources such as the Australian High Commission in Honiara (Tel. +677 21561) or the US Consular Representative, Keithie Saunders (keithieusa@solomon.com.sb , +677 23426).
