Insistent complaints from sailors whose boats were damaged in this marina have finally persuaded the owners to throw in the towel. The Waterfront Hotel has now dismantled the remaining sections of pontoons in its marina and the marina enclosure is closed to all vessels "until further notice". Anchoring directly off the marina wall is OK in about 10 metres of water, although the rebound of wash from ferries, fishing boats etc makes for a very bumpy anchorage. It is not possible to take a dinghy ashore via the unserviceable marina enclosure, as there are vertical concrete walls to climb; the small bay with sandy bottom and rocky foreshore immediately to the right (looking at the Waterfront from the sea) is the best option. Security for the dinghy could be a problem. It is essential to lock your yacht and stow outboard engines and other easily portable items below. The Waterfront Hotel still welcomes visiting crews to their excellent shower facilities (free), pool, bar and restaurant.
Labuan has a very substantial ship maintenance facility with a variety of skills and services also available for small craft maintenance.
Labuan is well connected to the mainland by ferries (to Kota Kinabalu and Limbang and Brunei) and water taxis (eg: to Menumbuk). These give access to the remarkable rainforest, diving, white water rafting and wildlife based activities in Brunei, Sabah and Sarawak.
