Just two years after it doubled its capacity this attractive marina on the island of Lanzarote is already full to capacity. Regarded by cruising sailors visiting the Canaries as the friendliest marina of the archipelago, over the years Puerto Calero has made great efforts to provide a high quality service to transient yachts. The marina prides itself on being the safest in the Canaries, which is indeed a major attraction to the increasing number of yacht owners who leave their boats here in between seasons. Some of these boats are left on the hard at Puerto Calero's boatyard, which offers a full range of repair facilities and has the largest hard standing area of any marina in the Canaries.

Conveniently placed on the easternmost island of the Canarian archipelago, Puerto Calero proudly describes itself as the ideal stop en route to the New World. The majority of yachts which stop here are indeed on a transatlantic passage, either to the Caribbean or to South America. Apart from individual cruising boats, Puerto Calero is also attracting boats taking part in organised events, such as the Transat 6.5 single-handed race starting from La Rochelle in September this year. After a stop in Puerto Calero the boats will race to Salvador da Bahia in Brazil. A round the world rally, starting from the French port of Bordeaux in September 2002, will also call at Puerto Calero. The leg that will finish in Puerto Calero will start at Casablanca in Morocco. From Puerto Calero the fleet will cruise via Fuerteventura to Las Palmas, from where the rally will continue to Dakar, in Senegal (details from tdm@loisirsnautiques.com ).

Puerto Calero is the brainchild of a local entrepreneur, José (Pepe) Calero, whose dream was to create on his land a world class marina. After many years of efforts and sacrifices, his dream has come true and the marina is now the focal point of a complex that also includes several private villas and apartments, a hotel and, eventually, a golf course.

Advance reservations, especially during the high season, from September to December, are highly recommended. Contact: Cristina Pérez info@puertocalero.com
