French Polynesia: Be Aware the Required Bond does NOT Cover All Situations

Countries: French Polynesia , New Zealand

This is information is worth repeating since it just happened to my crew, and it is something people should be aware of.

My crew, a New Zealander, acquired the bond that is normally required when you arrive in French Polynesia if you do not have in your possession a valid pre-paid airline ticket to your country of legal residence. He was required to return to New Zealand from Papeete for three weeks and purchased a ticket from Air New Zealand, round trip, from Papeete to Auckland and returning to Papeete. Prior to his leaving, I cleared the situation with Immigration officials at the airport in Papeete and they indicated that as long as he had a bond, he would be able to return without difficulty.

So, along with his documents he carried the bond papers which clearly state, in easy to read French, that it is security against the need for repatriation. In the event, Air New Zealand, even after calling the authorities in Papeete, refused to let him board his aircraft until he had purchased a cancellable return ticket to New Zealand from Papeete.
