The latest piracy report is of an attack on a large Taiwanese fishing boat with 26 crew 120 miles off the northeast tip of Madagascar. Nothing has been heard from this ship, FV Shiuh Fu, since it reported being attacked on the morning of 25th December 2010.

The pirates are increasingly using previously stolen ships from which to base their attacks. These vessels can be operated much further from their shore bases as well as having sophisticated navigational and communication equipment at their disposal. This is something of which any yachts in the Indian Ocean and the Red Sea should be very aware.
