Some time after warnings issued by the maritime authority in Canary Islands on sightings of drifting heavy wood logs, numerous logs, some up to 15 meters long, have been found on local beaches. Their origin is not known and local authorities confirm there may be thousands of such logs now in the vicinity of the islands. They constitute a very serious hazard to small craft navigation.

Currents in vicinity of Canary Islands follow the African Coast and the logs may become a hazard on the routes towards Cabo Verde islands and further out towards the West Indies.
