Response To News Report On Greek Yacht Taxes

Countries: Greece

We keep our boat in Greece (non EU registered boat), where we sail every year and we are only charged what the law calls for. 15 Euro per meter per 3 months. We are also subject to an annual fee for the customs, of 80 Euro and the coast guard permit to launch and retrieve the boat of 15 Euro annually.

We have no other expenses as they relate to the Greek Government. The harbour fees very from place to place. We sail in several islands (Northern Sporades, Limnos, Lesvos etc) and some of them charge nothing to tie up, as they try to promote more visiting yachts. Obviously we frequent the "free" islands a lot more.

We find the customs and port police very easy to work with (in the port of Volos) and we normally have all of the paperwork done in half a day, which includes the customs' agent visit to the boat.

One needs to keep in mind the hours of operation though, as Mondays and Wednesdays are only half days for these offices. Normally 9 to 1:30.

I hope this helps.

Alexis
