This book is a very comprehensive guide to the whole coast from the Rio Dulce area of Guatemala to the tip of the Yacatan peninsula in Mexico. It is a substantial 300 page guide and packed with information and sketch charts based on the author’s own surveys. These charts are not in colour, but are very clear, of a very large scale and give much useful detail. In an area where official charts are often of a much smaller scale, apart from being based on surveys as much as 100 years old, they form an invaluable aid when cruising this area. Also invaluable, are the two full-size charts (printed both sides) included in envelopes tucked inside the front and back covers of the book.

Due to the amount of information in the text, it is well worth thoroughly reading it through before setting off. Not only are there comprehensive descriptions of various destinations and anchorages, but all types of services, historical data and general information about each area, is included. Clearance procedures, banking, provisioning, wildlife, activities and chartering are just a few of the subjects covered. The first few chapters of the book cover many aspects of long-term cruising as it applies to this part of the world. The resulting advice is obviously the result of many years of personal experience.

Although principally aimed at the American market (as indicated by the passage routes given from various American ports), the Guide is a definite ‘must have’ for anyone wishing explore in depth this fascinating coast.
