We spent some days sailing our Beneteau 41 in North Sardinia area in June 2007.
The weather conditions are beautiful, but the water was a little cooler than usual at 19C. The western area has slightly harder conditions with occasional strong NW winds, even in summer.
You can easily cross to Bonifacio in Corsica for a day trip. Anchorages are not crowded and there is beautiful cristaline blue water all around. I would recommend two anchorages.

This marina is very well protected and only costs 24 euro per day (41ft boat). Ormagiatori are friendly and help everyone to find a place to berth. You can also get the licence to sail to Maddalena Islands here.
