Cook Islands, Penrhyn Atoll: Algal Bloom Deters Cruisers

Cruisers who have recently arrived at Penrhyn Atoll, Cook Islands, report that the lagoon is in the middle of an Algal Bloom. It is predicted the bloom will continue for the next 3-6 weeks.

Cruiser David Nutt reports, "I do not believe the algal bloom is harmful, you can swim, but the water is green and unappealing. It does not stain the hull (well, not during our 3 day stay), but I would not make water here.

"Some other cruisers went swimming and snorkeling on the outside of the pass where the water was clear. If we had known about this we may not have stopped there as snorkeling is a priority for us. We would have spent more time in Suvarov."
