Operation Sail (OPSAIL), established in the USA in 1961, was an event designed to promote good will and cooperation between countries while providing sail training and celebrating maritime history.

While tall ships form the centrepiece of the event, smaller sailing vessels also participate. Five OPSAIL events have been held to date, in 1964, 1976, 1986, 1992 and 2000 and the sixth is to be held this year from May to July 2012.

This year the event will take place in the following East coast cities:
MAY 23-30 in NEW YORK CITY
JUNE 1-12 in NORFOLK
JUNE 13-19 in BALTIMORE
JUNE 30-JULY 5 in BOSTON
JULY 6-8 in NEW LONDON

Boaters should be aware that the ships taking part in the event are travelling the entire East coast of the USA and there may be possible delays when the ships arrive and leave each port, with restricted access to associated waterways.

See the event website - www.opsail.org - for more details.
