A French sailor drowned and extensive damage was caused by a squall that hit the Ionian island of Lefkada late yesterday (Tuesday) afternoon.

The strong squall that hit the Bay of Vlihos (near Nidri) caused extensive damage, overturning boats in the boatyard and washing others up on shore.

A 60-year-old French man was recovered from the sea and rushed to hospital, where he was pronounced dead from drowning. He had been on a boat with his wife at the time of the squall and fell overboard.

The Nidri port authority is conducting an investigation into the circumstances of the accident.

Two British tourists were also endangered in Vlihos Bay when their sailboat developed a list and took on water, but they managed to reach shore safely.
