Latest Update: The Canal was reopened for traffic at 0839 on the morning of 9th December. However traffic going slow as there is a lot of debris in the water.

The Panama Canal was closed to all traffic yesterday afternoon (8th December) due to exceptionally heavy rain which raised lake levels and the flow in the rivers supporting the Canal, causing problems for transiting ships.

The Canal Authorities have suspended traffic movement as a safety measure until further notice, however the Canal is expected to re-open for traffic sometime today after adjustments to lake levels have been made by spilling water through the Dams along the system etc.

Some delays for transiting vessels must be anticipated for the next few days.

The last time Canal traffic was suspended was during the US invasion to Panama in 1989.
