Wrecked on reef near Savu Savu
Monday, July 13, 2009

A 61-year-old Swedish sailor enroute from New Zealand as part of her round-the-world tour was shipwrecked on a coral reef off Robinson Crusoe Island.

And she is on the verge of losing her only possession - the yacht - if the weather does not improve. Lisa Lindvall of Sweden left her home in 2001 on board her yacht Magia and has since been sailing alone.

Resort owner Wayne Latter said he was alerted about the woman's plight by a fisherman at 6am on Saturday.

"We immediately went to rescue her," he said. Mr Latter said they were used to rescuing those who ran aground the nearby reef.

"This is the third time for a vessel to run aground on the reef," he said.

Mr Latter said Ms Lindvall left New Zealand on the June 17 and struck bad weather and huge seas for most of the trip.

"Trying to make landfall she was pushed off course and drifted onto the reef before dawn," he said.

Mr Latter said Ms Lindvall was still in shock about the incident.
