It has always been illegal to operate any boats under 15m long commercially in the Canary Islands, but it has been enfoced more in the province of Tenerife than in other areas.

Since the first of January 2009 this is now being enforced in the province of Gran Canaria (which includes Lanzarote and Fuertventura)and the customs are starting to impound boats that are not working under Spanish Flag.

NOTE: sailing schools (i.e. Canary Sail and Club Sail Sea School), and dive companies etc. that are operating Spanish commercially registered (starting with 6a) are OK and are fully insured!
