Attempted break-in to yacht, Bari, Italy

Countries: Italy

On 9 September 2008, we tied up along side the public quay in the old harbor at Bari. We left the boat for approximately one hour in the late afternoon (broad daylight) while we went to town to handle officialities. There were numerous local fishing boats nearby and some men fishing from the jetty, but no other cruising yachts present.

When we returned, we discovered that someone had attempted to force the companionway lock with a tire iron. The lock, hasp and surrounding wood were damaged but fortunately entry was not gained. Some small items were stolen from the cockpit.

We recommend you do not leave your boat unattended here. Any other cruisers having similar experiences in Italy are requested to post.
