I read with interest (the below) message about a tender theft in Syracusa. The same thing
happened to us in the exact same spot by the bridge about 2 years ago. It seems we
interrupted the thieves though we we found a hammer and screw-driver by the padlock
and
damage to the padlock. They had taken our fuel can, anchor etc but had not yet
broken the
padlock, so we were lucky. But a warning to your readers, this is a bad harbour for
tender
theft!

When visiting Siracusa, Sicily, Italy in June 2008, we left our tender close to
the bridge between the old and new parts of Siracusa and close to the
Marina, as this is a place used by small fishing boats and loads of
traffic over the bridge.
However when we returned with the shopping, the Tender was gone.
The Tender was locked to a chain and also attached with its mooring lines,
but the thief managed to break the lock and cut the mooring lines.
We filed a report with the Police and we borrowed a friends tender to make
a long tour of the towns marinas and the complete bay to see if we could
find our tender, but we found nothing.
We informed the insurance company Pantaenius and hope they will cover the
cost of a new tender as the old one was only about 4 1/2 years old. But we
have not yet been informed and after nearly three months are still
waiting.
We bought a new tender in Malta and the total cost was about € 4.600
Unhappy Skipper.
