Rah Island Canoe Race – Annually every September

Published 16 years ago, updated 5 years ago

The Rah Island Canoe Race (held September 27 in 2008) offers the opportunity to participate in a 30-minute outrigger canoe race around Rah Island, experiencing rare cultural festival activities and the chance to compete for prizes in this very picturesque part of Vanuatu hidden from the usual tourist tracks.

The race begins and finishes on the beach in front of the Rah Beach Bungalows (formerly known as the Harry Memorial Guesthouse) and takes place at high tide.

Other activities in 2008 included a local prize vegetable and fruit competition, sand drawing demonstrations and a swim race across the lagoon.

Rah Island has picture postcard white sand beaches, one of the best views in Vanuatu, coral reefs and a picturesque lagoon for swimming, a forest for bushwalking, a variety of local activities on the mainland plus a truly incredible community with great hospitality.

Yachties can anchor off Mota Lava and take their dingy to Rah, or anchor at Sola and catch a local boat to Rah for the day or as an overnight trip. Yachties are welcome to turn up on the day. Please email the organisers if you plan to go, to help with numbers.

These festivities are “full up” with genuine WOW factor! This is a magical place hidden from the modern world. You can relax and unwind, explore land or sea, take part in the outrigger canoe race, or enjoy the cultural festival.
