Dangers Increase Off Somali Coast

Topic: Piracy
Countries: Djibouti, Somalia, Yemen

The authorities are advising all shipping that the waters near Somalia are once again considered dangerous. There have been reports of small boats originating from Somalia attacking shipping even as far as 100 miles offshore. Even large ships are now advised to pass 200 miles off the Somali coast. Cruising yachts planning to pass through that area to or from the Gulf of Aden are strongly advised to stay as far offshore as possible and to pass well to the east of the island of Socotra. Boats bound for the Red Sea should stay closer to the northern (Yemeni) shore and keep a safe distance from the Somali coast.
