March, 2008: update to the Greek cruising tax for non-EU boats controversy. We arrived in Greece on July 26, 2007 and EXPECTED to be in Turkey before 3 months had passed. But, the best laid plans..... We had a medical emergency and had to rush back to the USA in September, not having any choice but to leave the boat in Greece. While in the States, we requested and received a 3 month extension to the standard 6-month Transit Log from the Greek Ministry of Finance. They explained that they had nothing to do with cruising taxes, and that we would need to speak with Port Police. By the time we returned to Greece last week, our boat had been in Greece just over 7 months. When we visited the Port Police, we were assessed 418.98 euros: 14.67e x 12 meters x 2 quarters (2 three-month periods) + 19% VAT for the period of July 26-January 25th, or, about 209e per 3 month period. They didn't really care why the boat was in Greece. If it's there, you owe. period. If we get out of Greece before the next 3 month period is up (April 25th), then supposedly, we should NOT be assessed another quarter's worth of cruising tax; we hope. So if you want to visit Greece and not have to pay the tax, then get out before 3 months is up, REGARDLESS of the fact that you have a 6 month Transit Log. Hope that helps. Considering the low or NO costs incurred at town docks or at the uncompleted greek marinas, this tax is not that bad. We spent MUCH more than 418 euros in the 6 months that we cruised in Italy @ 40-60e/night, where there weren't as many snug harbours to anchor in. Just to keep it in perspective!
