Corrections and additions to World Cruising Handbook 3rd edition (2001).
Guam p. 362
Weather Typhoons can occur at any time but most likely between July and November.
Hawaii p.364
The Line Islands are a group of eleven atolls and low coral islands south of Hawaii. Eight belong to Kiribati. Kingman Reef (6°24′N 162°24′W), Palmyra Atoll (5°52′N 162°6′W), Jarvis Island (0°22′S 160°03′W) are US territories.
Kiribati p.369
The Line Islands are a group of eleven atolls and low coral islands south of Hawaii, eight of which belong to Kiribati. For the three which are US territories, see Hawaii
Northern Line Islands: Teraina (Washington Island), Tabuaeran (Fanning Island) and Kiritimati (Christmas Island). These are the only Line islands which are inhabited.
Central Line Islands: Malden Island (4°01′S 154°59′W), Starbuck Island (5°37′S 155°56′W).
Southern Line Islands: Caroline Island (9°57′S 150°13′W), Vostok Island (10°06′S 152°25′W), Flint Island (11°26′S 151°48′W).
Filippo Reef (°30′S 151°50′W) is a submerged reef about 240 nm east of Starbuck Island but outside the EEZ of Kiribati.
Fanning Island: An old submerged barge is now used by visiting yachts for tying up alongside.
Clearance: You must report to the local police on any island you visit after clearing in to the country; some atolls have a Quarantine officer who may wish to inspect the yacht.
It may be more convenient to arrive with a visa if you end up stopping at any of the outer islands before Tarawa. Note that if you are issued with a one year multiple entry visa it will be valid from its date of issue (not the date of your arrival in Kiribati).
A one month's visitor's permit is normally issued on arrival for no charge, with extensions of one month (USD60 per person) at a time up to four months.
Procedure on Departure: However, on departure it is usually possible to get permission to call at an outer island and continue on from there out of the archipelago. You need to make the request in a few days before departure and you will be issued with a permit to show to police when arriving at your next destination.
Palau p.376
Customs also charge a $20US per head departure tax.
