For the sixth edition of his fifteen year old cruising guide Rod Heikell has widened its scope to include not just the Ionian islands but also the adjacent mainland from the Albanian border to the SW tip of the Peloponnese. The “Ionian” is a useful addition to the author's highly successful “Greek Waters Pilot” (latest edition reviewed on Noonsite in December 2007). Whereas the latter paints a broad picture of the Ionian Sea and its many attractions, the former gives a lot more detail about ports, anchorages and local attractions. As the author points out, this cruising companion is aimed primarily at charterers and flotilla sailors who may have only limited time at their disposal and need to get all essential information between the covers of one book. This the author does well and, in spite of that caveat, the book is just as useful for cruising sailors with more time on their hands. As with all Imray guides, the book is nicely produced, with excellent chartlets and port plans, and many colour photographs.
