Until recently the entire Mediterranean was comprehensively covered by the Imray cruising guides and there were few other sources but a newcomer has arrived on the scene and the buyer now has a choice. The American publisher Wiley Nautical, who had taken over the British publisher Fernhurst, has launched its own range of guides covering various cruising areas of Europe and is now expanding its coverage of the Mediterranean (West Aegean Cruising Companion was reviewed on Noonsite in December). Described not as guides but as cruising companions, these nicely produced books are indeed more than just ordinary pilots. The rich history of these ancient lands is well covered and any worthwhile shore attractions are well described. Practical information on every place is listed under “Useful Information” and covers not just matters of immediate interest to cruising sailors, but also restaurants, museums, transportation, etc.
“The Ionian Cruising Companion” covers all Ionian islands, the adjacent Greek mainland from the Albanian border to the SW tip of the Peloponnese, and the Gulf of Corinth including the canal itself. The introductory chapter deals with all such essential matters as weather, formalities, official ports of entry, costs, as well as listing a number of useful websites, with the notable exception of www.noonsite.com.
The rest of the book is divided into colour-coded chapters, each listing details of every port, marina or anchorage, accompanied by coloured harbour plans and many photographs, including some very useful aerial ones.
The author Vanessa Bird deserves to be congratulated on a well written and equally well researched book. Readers might be interested to know if she cruised the area on her own boat, but this is not mentioned.
