Japan To Solomons

Topic: Routing
Countries: Japan, Solomon Islands

I just sailed across the Pacific and sold my boat in Australia. All of my books are packed up, including my world cruising routes book. I’m in Tokyo and I’m thinking of buying a boat here and sailing south back to the Solomon’s, PNG, and Bali. Do you have a Cyclone/Typhoon chart for Asia that you can email me? I don’t understand the weather for this area and usually rely on Jimmy’s route book.

A March-early April departure from Japan is about the best time to go south as the NE monsoon is still in force and the risk of typhoons quite low. It also means that you will reach the South Pacific during the safe season. From Fukuoka you should set a course for Guam, which is the best place on the way to get provisions, fuel etc. From Guam set a course through Micronesia that would cross the equator at a convenient point to take you to your destination in the Solomons. You should have favourable NE winds for most of the route.

You said that you have my World Cruising Routes all packed up - it would be a great help to get hold of a copy as you will need it both to sail to the Solomons (or PNG) and also later. You may also order from our website my latest book "A Passion for the Sea" as it describes my recent trip to Vanuatu, PNG, etc.
