As part of its bicentenary celebrations, the long established US publishing house has launched three cruising guides to the Eastern Mediterranean that cover Croatia, the Ionian and West Aegean. The latter is described as a cruising companion and Rob Buttress has indeed attempted to go beyond producing the usual pilot by providing the reader with as much information as possible on the many attractions that are to be found ashore. The book focuses on the Gulf of Volos, the Sporades and the large island of Evia, an area that for some reason is far less crowded than the much more visited Cyclades and Dodecanese. The book contains comprehensive notes on pilotage, suggested waypoints, and lists details of all ports and anchorages. Each place is accompanied by a colour chartlet or harbour plan and there are also many informative photographs, the aerial shots being especially useful. Having been away from Greece for several years, Rob Buttress’ excellent book has whetted this reviewer ‘s appetite to return to that interesting cruising area, and spend some time sailing in the author’s wake in those waters so temptingly described in this beautifully produced book.
