Just a quick question regarding wind and current for the route from Bali to Langkawi. We are sailing from Darwin, departing approximately mid October and need to get to Langkawi. We are considering the alternative of either west around Sumatra, or up the inside to Singapore. Can you please advise on significant winds and currents, further than that described in your book (5th ed).

Going all the way round Sumatra is a long way and it all depends on the time of year what kind of winds to expect. The shorter route goes inside the Indonesian archipelago, and the route suggested in my book is probably the best. You may have favourable winds for part of the trip, but there will be quite a bit of motoring. The majority of yachts go that way.
