Brazil's outrageous customs practices

Countries: Brazil

Our catamaran currently in circumnavigation, stopped in Fortaleza, northern Brazil. I sent some urgently needed electronic spares by Fedex. I clearly labelled the goods "for yacht in Transit, not for import into Brazil." I was therefore charged a 100% duty by Brazil customs!

Having sent stuff to the boat before, and never having had to pay customs in many other countries, this was a very unwelcome and unpleasant surprise. Fedex told me that, despite the label, the parts would not have been allowed into the country unless the fees were advanced by fedex on the spot!

I am going to investigate this incident to see if there are any international laws pertaining to goods marked for "Yacht in transit, not for import."

Avoid Brazil if you need to send spares to your vessel!
