Looking for a way to let family and friends know where you are when you’re away? Yachtplot.com may have the answer.

The service, a low cost alternative to satellite tracking, requires no special onboard equipment. Yachtplot will establish and manage a website for your voyage and you can use almost any method of communication – email, text messaging, Internet, fax or regular mail – to send your position and post messages on Yachtplot.com’s bulletin board.

Once received, your location will be graphically displayed on a world map on the website. Access to your information is password protected, so you control who can follow your vessel’s voyage, whether you’re travelling round the world or are just out for a summer cruise. Your position can be updated daily, or more often if you have Internet access to make the changes yourself.

Various fee structures are available, but a subscription to Yachtplot can be had for as little as $2 a week. Users pay a one-time setup fee of $20. Nice features include a mini messaging system, a display of your last five positions linked together on the map, and a log of all the position reports you have submitted.

Visit Yachtplot.com to get more information about the service.
