Seeking Information On PNG Visas

We have 2 young children, age 2 & 7, and would like to cruise PNG from Australia on our way to Asia & Europe in 2008/9. We read that cruising permits/visaa for PNG are 60 days. We would like to go to Madang for the highland sing sing in Mt Hagen in Sept, then stay the Nth West Monsoon season in New Ireland/Britain area. How do cruisers get a visa long enough to stay the season here? Any info from other cruisers would be appreciated.
