I plan to bring my steel 50' motor yacht from Subic to Honolulu when it is completed in Hong Kong in a couple of years. Any advice on timing and routing to enjoy the trip would be appreciated.
There are two basic options for your proposed voyage, both with some advantages and also disadvantages.
Depending on the time of year you plan to do it in, you could take a NE sweep via Japan, sail as far as Alaska, then down to Hawaii. Best time: early summer when danger of typhoons is not so great.
The other option is to head east also to the N of the equator. You need to take a lot of fuel with you, but you may be able to take advantage of the east setting equatorial counter-current. Timing is not so important on this route.
Both routes are described in detail in the current (5th) edition of my World Cruising Routes which I urge you to buy as it would help you a lot in your planning.
