Mexico's government has committed itself to an ambitious "megaproject" in its recognition of the importance of tourism, and especially nautical tourism, to the country's economic well-being. An "Escalera Nautica" or nautical ladder, is to be built on Baja California the peninsular just south of California so popular as an cruising destination for North American sailors.
Fonatur, Mexico's tourism promotion organization, is planning to create some 23,000 new berths for yachts with 12 new marinas to be built, linking up with ten already existing marinas to create a ladder of facilities spaced out along both coasts of the peninsula. Aas well as the marina development, there will be a corresponding expansion and consolidation of the usual tourism infrastructure such as hotels and golf courses, creating some concern among environmentalists that this ambitious project could impact negatively on local ecosystems.
