The army seized power in Fiji today - the fourth coup for the country in less than two decades. Trouble had been brewing for weeks between
Fiji's military commander Commodore Frank Bainimarama and Prime Minister Mr Qarase.
Armed troops surrounded Mr Qarase's house and manned checkpoints at government buildings and other points throughout the capital, Suva.
The takeover has been condemned by neighbours New Zealand and Australia while
the Commonwealth of Britain may consider suspending Fiji.
Fiji is one of the most developed nations in the South Pacific and relies heavily on its tourist industry with some 400,000 annual visitors. The UK and US governments are at present advising their citizens against any non-essential travel to Fiji. Visitors currently in Fiji should register with their consulate in Suva.
