Countries: Singapore, Thailand
We attempted a short handed passage to Tasmania in July 06 via Singapore, Sunda Straits, Chrismas Island to Fremantle and King Island (home).
Excellent conditions and a welcome passage through Indonesian waters via Banka Straits with lots and lots of congestion, Sunda Straits (the Volcano is worth a visit), great sailing and fishing along the way, very friendly Indonesian fishermen.
No problems experinced in Indonesia waters, as against Thai waters where we where it appears not warmly welcome having departed from KoKong Cambodia.
Upon entering Indian ocean 14Th a heavy to very heavy South Eastern swell (8 metres plus) was encountered this against the SW winds 25 to 35 knots presented very unpleasant conditions.
At position 105 Miles North West of Christmas Island we turned back to Singapore as the sea swell was very heavy against the wind even with full height bulwarks we were very wet on deck and taking a flogging - it blew and rolled the ice out of my Scotch.
It should be noted that the conditions stated in the Pilot (BA) do indicate the existance of the SE Trade winds as "firmly established" but to some extent downplay or don't mention the swell (SW to SSW) as against the wind gusting to 45Knts SE and the thus confused seas.
Returned to Singapore and the usual "smoke and mirrors" and the restrictions placed upon visiting private vessels, noting Mr. Rice's comments (on Noonsite) that Singapore is not what it appears in relation to facilities and services, even duty free spirits are resticted to so many cans or CC per person per day is "allowed" to be consumed.
It is intended and are planninjg a new attempt for December to complete West - About back to King Island.
