With the start of the ever-popular Darwin to Kupang Rally leaving Darwin Harbour on July 22 with over 100 entries, Darwin has been chosen as Noonsite Port of the Month.

As the capital of Australia’s Northern Territory, Darwin is a cosmopolitan city with pastel coloured buildings, wide tree-lined avenues and a slow measured pace perfectly adapted to the usual 40° temperatures. The combined presence of an active racing and cruising community and a large fishing fleet has resulted in an excellent range of repair facilities unequalled for thousands of miles making it a favourite place among long distance cruising sailors. Workshops, chandleries and service units offer a comprehensive range of marine repair facilities in the mooring basin area.

Once clearance formalities have been completed, yachts can anchor off the Darwin Sailing Club in Fannie Bay or the Dinah Beach Cruising Club in Frances Bay. Docking facilities are available at Cullen Bay Marina, Tipperary Waters Marina and Bayview Marina.

Darwin is also a good starting point for inland trips whether to the nearby Kakadu nature reserve or to the spectacular Kimberleys. As the closest Australian port to Indonesia, Darwin is also the ideal jump-off point for a cruise in that archipelago of ten thousand islands and is departure point for the annual Darwin to Kupang Rally. The popular Darwin to Ambon race will also re start in July 2007 after several years hiatus.

The North Australian Marine Guide, produced by the Darwin Marine Service Association, has full details of yachting facilities and is handed out on arrival from all the boatyards, marinas, sailing clubs, etc. A copy can be obtained by emailing a postal address to Sadgrove's Quay: sadgrove@d130.aone.net.au
