On June 15, 2006 US President George W. Bush announced the creation of the world’s largest marine conservation area off the coast of the northern Hawaiian Islands. Under the U.S. Antiquities Act this area of pristine coral reefs and unique marine species has been designated a “national monument”.
The Northwestern Hawaiian Islands Marine National Monument encompasses nearly 140,000 square miles of U.S. waters. The monument will be managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
