New taxes have been introduced by Sardinia's regional government this summer which affect yachts as well as second homes and private aircraft. The luxury taxes are targetted at the millionaires and billionaires that regularly visit Sardinia during the summer months but affect any visiting yacht over 14m LOA.
Yachts that have a one year contract with a marina in Sardinia do not pay tax.
The new tax must be paid by any yacht of 14m. LOA or longer, staying in any Sardinian port, landing or mooring place in the period between June 1st and September 30th. The amounts are as follows:
1000 Euros for yachts between 14 and 15.99 m LOA
2000 Euros for yachts between 16 and 19.99 m LOA
3000 Euros for yachts between 20 and 23.99 m LOA
5000 Euros for yachts between 24 and 29.99 m LOA
10,000 Euros for yachts between 30 and 60 m LOA
15,000 Euros for yachts longer than 60 m LOA
The above figures are halved for sailing yachts. The tax must be paid in full, even for a one day visit, and payment must be made within 24 hrs of arrival. For 2006 payment can be made at the Post Office but in future, payment via Internet or directly to the Port authority is foreseen. The regional Park & Forest police are responsible for enforcing payment.
Exempt from the tax are yachts belonging to Sardinian residents; yachts participating in an officially recognised racing event; yachts having a yearly berthing contract in a Sardinian port; commercially registered charter yachts.
Yachts less than 14 metres, and yachts visiting Sardinia outside of the above mentioned summer period, will not be subject to this tax.
