The 600 nautical mile race was suspended in the late nineties due to conflict in that area but was re-inaugurated in 2007 very successfully. Pictures of the 2007 event can be seen on their website.
The inaugural Darwin Ambon Yacht Race took place 30 years ago in 1976 when a small fleet of intrepid sailors sailed the 600 nautical mile race to the capital of the Spice Islands. The classic race has attracted yachts from around the world and the fleet totalled nearly 100 before it was suspended.
Skippers and crews used to enjoy the race as the seasonal fresh south easterlies saw the majority of yachts fly their spinnakers until they were in the lee of Ambon harbour.
For 2008 rally organisers have also introduced a Rally division.
After Ambon Wayne Huxley and his catamaran "Cruise Missile" will escort all interested yachts to Makassar via Ternate, Manado, Pare Pare and of course have a party on the Equator.
